New agency's point system helps new speakers
become successful: professionally and financially.

[Erie PA] If you can't join them, represent them. When veteran speaker Andrea Reynolds went into hiding for her safety she could no longer appear or speak in public. But that didn't stop her from opening a speaker agency so she could use her expertise and experience to produce income. And when she became homeless, in an effort to act as her aging father's patient advocate, she restarted Andrea Reynolds International Speaker Agency (ARISA). Unlike a speaker bureau, a speaker agency represents the speaker's financial interests.

This time around she will provide more mentoring. Because of the flood of self-published authors who have little to no experience as speakers, many have been under the mistaken impression that the agency should provide free marketing services so they could speak for free to sell their books. That would mean no commissions for the agency. They didn't see the agency as a business that will fail without income. Mainly because they don't yet see speaking and publishing as more than a sideline to their "real jobs", not a profession (business) itself.

So Reynolds developed a system of points that new speakers could earn as they learn how to think bigger as entrepreneurs. Points allow them to see how close or far they are from qualifying for representation (100 points). With more points speakers can also decrease the size of the commission they pay the agency. Speakers will earn points for studying trade publications, participating in seminars, developing effective web sites, understanding contracts, and accepting a code of ethics.

Because many speakers are confused about what speaker agents actually do, Reynolds has written and posted to her agency web site a
series of articles including a list of 35 benefits of having agency representation. Soon to be an online class, a $2 tip sheet, "20 Steps to Becoming a $20,000 an Hour Speaker" is available for download.
