"Ask
Andrea About Advice Empires"
I
mentor and promote specialists who want to build a
lucrative consulting, writing, speaking empire in one body
of knowledge. Think Dr. Phil, Suze Orman, Steve Irwin,
Julia Child, Dave Ramsey, Martha Stewart, etc. If this
appeals to you, please subscribe to my column on Google
Groups, Ask
Andrea.
Ask
me a question about Building YOUR Advice Empire. See below
for an example of the kind of questions I answer. Each
Monday I will provide a concise answer to selected
questions.
Your
price of admission is a question to
me about building your advice empire that could very well be
answered in a future column. In order to give specific
advice to subscribers it's useful to know who my
subscribers are, so I would like to know
your
name,
your
expertise (your future empire)
where in the
world you are, your web
site, and
the email address
you want to subscribe with.
(Hint:
Successful empire builders want people to know who they are
and how to contact them. People who prefer to remain
anonymous don't build empires.)
And
each week a deeply discounted service or product is
announced... to save you money... only for
subscribers. I promise: No SPAM, no list
distribution.

Here's an example of a question:
Have you ever helped anyone start a genealogy business? Do you know if there is enough demand out there to start a business for genealogy? I hate my job and love the idea of working for myself. History and researching history are things I am passionate about, but I don't know if I can quit my job to do that.
Thanks for asking. No, I haven't helped anyone else start a geneology business and that's good because you want to be able to be the expert where few others exist.
I work with a wide array of people who have a very specialized area of interest and knowledge. I can't be an expert on THEIR subjects but I can guide each one to find a way to make their passion successful as an expert. I've been doing this since 1979.
Yes, I think geneology has potential as a lucrative business for you... not immediately, but if you follow my 20 steps you can build your own "advice empire" over time. (The passion you have as you build can carry you through the hours when you still have to be on the job.) The key is to position yourself so people seek you out for your advice. You need something that will create a "buzz". I can help you figure out what that is and help you create the buzz.
Look at PBS for example, they had (have?) a show - perhaps it was a series - on Sunday mornings on how to trace your family tree, and now they have a "history detective" program where a show is dedicated to investigating where an historical artifact came from and inevitably there is uncovered information about the family.
You could create your own "family tree investigation" consulting firm. I suggest writing down a blueprint of how you want your business to look and sharing it with me. I can shepherd you through the stages so you don't go astray from your path and make expensive mistakes. Start with a 1-2 page outline of what you envision your business to be in the future. I'll keep anything you tell me confidential. Of course, I charge for my services, just as you will be doing. You can hire me 30 minutes at a time or retain me for whatever length of time you choose.
Would you send me your business blueprint when you have something on paper? I get excited when I see someone get excited about their area of expertise. That's my passion.
