Questions and Answers about Speaking Fees

Q. What do other speakers charge?

A. While we don't discuss what our clients who speak charge -- those figures are strictly confidential except when in serious discussion with a meeting planner about a specific event -- there are ways we can help you get some idea of current speaking fees in general terms... for example:

We have a report,
Secrets for Setting and Quoting Your Speaking Fees, which lists many representative speaking fees we have seen reported in various newspaper and magazine articles over several years.

Q. What should I charge?

A.
This is a far more important question than the one above because it's not really relevant what other speakers charge. Fees depend on a speaker's reputation, experience, scarcity of expertise, size of audience, type of audience, length of presentation, amount of traveling required, etc.

For speakers who have difficulty setting, quoting and raising their speaking fees, we're available for
30 minute private consultations to help speakers determine their fee schedule.

Q. How do I get higher fees than I'm offered?

A.
You either need to learn to be a good negotiator or you need to find someone who is.

We can teach you some techniques for speaking up for yourself that are honest or we can handle your negotiations for you when you'd like us to step in. We can do this on a case by case basis either for a straight fee based on time spent or for an agreed upon percentage of your fee. You don't have to be represented by Andrea Reynolds in order to hire us in this capacity. Just
contact us and we can discuss this option.

Q. Do you ever handle fee discussions and negotiations for speakers you don't represent?

A. Yes, if you know any speakers who wish they had someone to handle fee negotiations for them on an occasional basis, please tell them about this service.

For example, perhaps you know someone who is commanding fees of only a few hundred when really he deserves to be paid a few thousand dollars but can't make the leap himself. I can step in (for a commission) to help him increase his financial position. It would be best if he contacts me when he's ready.

If a speaker needs assistance and brings me an offer to look over, I provide:

1. Fee negotiations for any speaker, payable by a commission of the speaker's fee for that event.

2.
Fee negotiation consultation for any speaker, for a flat fee, so that the speaker feels more confident in discussions with event planners.

3.
Contract critiques to assess the usefulness (or not) of your speaking contract. We can insert clauses that make your contract more profitable for you.

Q. Do you offer finder's fees?

A. Yes, in these 2 situations.

a. There may be a finders fee for you if a confirmed booking results from your recommendation to an event planner of certain speakers on our
speaker directory. Look for the ff symbol next to a speaker's listing. You must tell us early on to whom you've made the recommendation.

b. I also offer 5-10-15-20% finders fee on speaking engagement referrals that result in a paid engagement for me, personally on
Kindness as a Marketing Tool.

Q. What should I pay a speaker?

A. When we are in discussion with meeting planners and conference organizers we do try to negotiate win-win scenarios while still working to get the speaker's stated fees. We need to know what the organization can afford and what they are willing to provide to make it worthwhile to the chosen speaker.

Our 6 page report,
33 Ways to Get the Best Presentation from Your Guest Speakers will also provide some specific, creative ideas that meeting planners can use.
