Pantry BEFORE
Photo 326

The small pantry off the kitchen was filled with many items that belonged elsewhere, making the room not only visually unappealing but also impossible to navigate.

The pantry is now pleasant to look at and accessibility has increased tenfold. More importantly the pantry is functioning as it should: a place to store food and food preparation items. Everything is within easy reach without having to move anything aside. There is now free counter space (and electricity) so appliances like the slow cooker and bread maker can be in use where they are without taking up counter space in the kitchen.

Now all food is stored on a 5 foot open shelf system rather than behind doors, so items can be found instantly and food isn't ignored or wasted. Food items are grouped according to type: soups, sauces, sugary items, mixes, beverages, baking ingredients, pastas, canned meats, etc.

Here's what I did:

  • Moved the washer and dryer to the basement.
  • Purchased the right connectors so washer and dryer could finally be hooked up.
  • Installed the washer and dryer in the basement. (Also set up a drying area.)
  • Relocated the two white storage cabinets to other parts of the house: bathroom and kitchen next to stove.
  • Moved the bathroom over-toilet shelf out and advertised it for sale.
  • Purchased the plastic shelf unit for $40 rather than the $90 shelf the owner found. ($50 savings on an item only she would ever see.)
  • Assembled the shelf unit (5 minutes).
  • Placed the food storage unit on the opposite wall so walking in was easier.
  • Organized the food items in groups.
  • Emptied paper sugar and flour sacks into large empty, air-tight, plastic pretzel jars to keep out any bugs, mice, etc.
  • Relocated owner's tools and hardware from the cabinets and drawers to the basement on convenient shelves that were occupied by empty boxes.
  • Stored the owner's fine china, flatware and crystal ware in the permanent cabinets under the counter. Previously these had been stored in 4 boxes, openly, in the dining room.

Time required for emptying the pantry, relocating furniture and appliances, shopping, hooking up appliances, and restocking shelves: One full day.

Actual cost of the plastic shelf, appliance connectors, and power strip for counter appliances: $49.69

Feeling of joy and serenity for the owner: Priceless.
