The reason I've stopped is because people assumed I was filthy rich and that I should perform all my consulting and marketing services for new clients at no charge. As a result I've lived ten years with almost no income. (That probably shocked you.) I can't tell you how many times a day people became outraged with me that I expected to be paid for my support, methods and smart advice and that I wouldn't invest my time and energy in their careers for free. I found it perplexing and confounding. It's a shame that they wouldn't pay me because I have helped a lot of people through the years multiply their incomes and raise their profiles to local and national celebrity status.

I have finally given up trying to market and support others who don't respect me enough to pay me, and will treat myself as my own client so I can rebuild my own empire. The following is excerpted from my previous web site:

Most people on the planet have a passion for a subject they know a great deal about - technology, the future, safety and security, mortgages, fibromyalgia, brain cancer, Greek cuisine, starting a business in China, fly fishing, manatees, vinegar, bubbles, handgun legislation, beading, personal finance, etc. - and they may not realize that others will pay to obtain their knowledge. But it's true. Your advice, wisdom, opinion, knowledge and experience are valuable to others. You don't have to have degrees, only be smart, organized, fearless and articulate.

My 12 Contrarian Principles for Building Your One-Person Knowledge or Advice Empire

1. Do the one thing you absolutely love and charge for it.
2. Ignore the dream-killers around you.
3. Promote your own name rather than a company name.
4. Position yourself as the leader in your niche, not a follower or an also-ran.
5. Narrow your niche even more or create a new niche if necessary.
6. Multiply yourself by offering your specialized knowledge in a variety of formats.
7. Attract people to you, rather than "knocking on doors" to get clients.
8. Avoid obvious paid advertising.
9. Avoid working for free.
10. Get paid to promote yourself.
11. Do fun things that just happen to be newsworthy.
12. Be a memorable person: a contrarian, a maverick, a pioneer, a rebel.
