A Twist on the Home Giveaway Essay
Contest… a Triple-Barreled Campaign.
[
Niagara Region, Ontario ] “The condo association board says
I must not operate a publishing/consulting website, my sole
source of income, from my unit so I need to leave,” says
writer-home economist-kindness advocate, Andrea Reynolds.
“I just want to work and earn a living as a contributing
member of society.”
Posted online at www.HomesByOwner.com/21393,
the 3 bedroom, one-and-a-half bath unit was purchased in
September 2005 for $135,000. Unable to attract suitable
offers for her updated, Geneva Street condo in St.
Catharines Ontario, the 58 year old, veteran marketing
consultant has a three-pronged approach:
1.
Sell
her 24 self-help and how-to
e-books in
defiance of the board’s order. Some titles: OutSmarting Sweetheart
Swindlers, 365 Critical Questions You Need to Ask Each
Other Before You Marry, and The Bed and Breakfast Guest Etiquette
Quiz. For
more, see her website: www.AndreaReynolds.com
2. Hold an essay contest
with no fee to give away the condo. The theme is “10 Reasons Why I Deserve
to Win Andrea’s St. Catharines Condo.” She has received
fewer than 20 entries as people seem to be skeptical about
a no-fee essay contest. (Her online condo auction on
Craig’s List and Kijiji received inquiries, but no bids.)
3. Hold an essay contest
with a $10 entry fee to give away her “Handy Ande” services
as a professional home economist for 5
days. She will be your
personal assistant, business assistant or household helper
depending on the Wish List you send with your reasons why
she would enjoy working for you. For every 500 entries
received, Reynolds will choose 2 winners and spend 5 days
working for each one no matter where in North America they
reside. The twist is: everyone who enters wins something.
If the 3 campaigns raise $170,000, she can pay off the
mortgage for the condo winner and reduce the debts she has
incurred over 16 months. Then Reynolds, a US citizen and
Permanent Resident of Canada, can live in her van as she
travels from winner to winner in what could be a continuing
contest.
Reynolds has a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and
Consumer Studies and Business from Kent State University.
With 30 years in private practice, she has been quoted in
Time, USA Today, Globe and Mail, and interviewed on
national TV and radio. More info: www.AndreaReynolds.com

Background info
Handy Ande to the rescue. She'll manage your finances, put
your affairs in order, organize your life or surroundings.
Andrea Reynolds, a Professional Home Economist, will come
to your home or office anywhere in mainland United States
or Canada to provide services for 5 days (Value: $2,225).
Her contest requires a fee of $10. and a quasi-essay: your
wish list of services, why working for you and why your
location would be interesting.
For every 500 valid entries Reynolds will choose 2 winners,
and 498 more people will win e-books valued at $10 to $25.
The more entries received the more winners she can choose
and the more she can subsidize the auction of her 3 bedroom
condo. She will drive to each winner’s location in her
Handy Ande Van.
Reynolds is candid about her motives. “I’ve had 10 years of
constant rejection after a courageous act as a good
citizen. I want to find a new community where my work is
valued, where I can earn a living and give more to others.
And as a Dave Ramsey fan, if I can eliminate a mortgage I
can have a retirement nest egg in 10 years. A week away to
visit new places will allow me to be productive, feel
valued and meet good people face-to-face.”
She explains: “I brought US money into the local economy,
but other people’s decisions here make it impossible for me
to be a self-sufficient, contributing member of society. I
need to move on.”
Reynolds was in
hiding for 7 years because she helped Toronto police put a
criminal in jail and they couldn't protect her from
retaliation. She shut down her B & B and gave away
everything. Bullied and harassed for 7 years by her
neighbors, she couldn't earn an income because it wasn't
safe to appear in public. She returned to Canada to start
over only to find her building’s management forbids her
from owning a US web site where she earned income selling
e-books online and consulting by email and phone. (Other
residents own home- based businesses.) Unable to sell her
home Reynolds had to invent a way to break free.
Says Reynolds, “My philosophy is: When life hands you lemons, make
lemon meringue pie. This contest is my lemon meringue pie.”
A national charity that works to reduce hidden homelessness
will receive part of the funds she raises.
