Secret consumer helps professional practices avoid
criticism and negative online reviews
[Erie PA] You’ve seen episodes of
the Undercover
Boss on TV. Now
there is The Undercover
Client.
Andrea Reynolds
is on a mission to motivate
doctors, dentists, chiropractors, veterinarians, realtors,
lawyers, banks and car dealers to be conscious of how they
treat the people they serve. Those people talk. And they
post their experiences - negative and positive - on
Internet review sites and online forums.
Reynolds becomes your patient, client, guest, in order to
give you an extensive report of what you or your staff does
that may repel your clients, patients, guests… or why
you’re not attracting more. The 61-year-old, former
marketing consultant for experts is not mean-spirited; her
aim is to see that you don’t work against your own best
interests. She observes and notes every detail from the
initial contact to paying your fees. (Reynolds stays
ethical and objective by paying her own way.)
Says Reynolds, “I don’t suggest clients spend pots of money
on a luxury image. Sometimes a homey atmosphere is
welcoming, and when overhead is low, client fees may be
affordable to more people. But if your clinic smells like
mildew, or your elderly patients can’t navigate their
walkers through your doorways, you’re setting yourself up
for unhappy patients, complaints, or worse, non-returning
patients and clients.”
Her client reports remain confidential; but those who don’t
hire her run the risk of her writing blog posts about the
services she retains. Good and bad. And she leads seminars
in which she discusses her experiences with nameless
organizations. But first she gives each firm an opportunity
to make things right. (See sidebar for actual
examples.)

A short list of what Andrea has experienced in Erie:
1.
A real estate
agent who tinkled in
the toilet, and flushed, as she returned Andrea’s phone
call.
2. A bank manager
who refused to let Andrea
open an account because she felt anyone from out of town
must be a drug dealer.
3. A physician
who charged Andrea $45 to
take her blood pressure and when she asked for an
explanation of the charge, he added another $25 charge to
her bill... twice.
4. An RV dealer
who refused to show Andrea
the inside of any RV on the lot (3 different attempts)
despite the $10,000 check in her pocket.
5. A dentist
who was more interested in
providing expensive cosmetic dentistry than finding the
cause of Andrea’s severe mouth pain.
6. A veterinarian
who required that Andrea sign
a full page release absolving the practice of all blame if
anything went wrong, but wouldn't let her have a copy of
it.
7. Eight out of 9 lawyers
who never returned Andrea’s
phone call when she tried to hire each one. (One of the
firms advertised on television to generate new business.)
8. A cashier at a doctor's
office made Andrea pay
an additional 66% over the doctor's handwritten invoice
amount before she would allow Andrea to leave the office.
9. A real estate
agent who showed
Andrea only derelict $40,000 homes when Andrea said she had
$40,000 cash for a down payment.
10. A landlord
who refused to provide an
affordable, non-toxic solution for Andrea’s wet,
potentially dangerous basement floor, but had money to put
into new flooring in the empty unit next door.
There are more… Andrea shares the details when she speaks
at business meetings and conferences.
